CHESAPEAKE CITY -- As  evening arrived on a Monday in the middle of December, we paused for a few minutes at the Bethel A.M.E. Church. The historic Church is on the corner of 2nd and Pine streets in South Chesapeake City.  A cornerstone from 1871 bears the letters A.M.E. Church on this Greek Revival-style house of worship.  Later, Mary Sophia Bayard of Philadelphia leased the lot on the northwest corner of Pine & 2nd Streets in June 1882 to the trustees of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church for a dollar a year, according to land records.  Also, an African-American Schoolhouse across from the 19th century church is located on Pine Street.
